Which paddle is right for me?

Short answer: if you play regularly, choose carbon. If you're buying for a family or a group that's just starting, choose fibreglass. If you're still using a wooden paddle, either will feel like a big step up.

Wood, fibreglass or carbon: how the three paddle types compare on weight, feel, control and who they suit

Our picks: for weekly players, the matte carbon 2-paddle set ($59.98 per paddle), with a softer 16 mm core. For a smart paddle of your own, the fibreglass paddle with cover ($59.95). For families and new groups, the family set ($39.24 per paddle).

Four things to check on any paddle

  1. Weight. Around 200–235 g suits most players. Lighter paddles are quicker at the net and easier on the wrist and elbow over a long session. Heavier ones add power but tire the arm sooner.
  2. Core thickness. A 13 mm core feels crisper and gives more pop. A 16 mm core feels softer and more forgiving on off-centre hits, which many players with sore elbows prefer.
  3. Face. Fibreglass is lively and forgiving. Carbon gives more control, so your dinks and drops land where you aim.
  4. Grip. If your hand cramps or you squeeze hard to hold the paddle, a thicker grip helps. An overgrip is a cheap way to add thickness and cushioning.

About tournament approval

Most social and club play has no paddle rules. Sanctioned tournaments usually require a paddle on the USA Pickleball approved list. We haven't confirmed approval for our current paddles, so if you play tournaments, check with your organiser first.
